Early Childhood Screening

The Williamstown Early Childhood screening is taking place March 8th and 9th at St. Partrick's Parish Center on Southworth Street. The screening is open to all children who are residents of Williamstown born between 9/1/07 and 8/31/2009. Early Childhood screening is beneficial in providing a greater understanding of a young child's development. This screening will provide parents/guardians information about their child's development in the following areas: Speech and language, verbal reasoning, fine motor, gross motor, hearing and vision. BASIC RIGHTS In Special Education: A Workshop for Parents and Professionals

Date: February 29, 2012

Location: Mt. Greylock Regional School (Library)

Time: 6:30pm-8:30pm

The Basic Rights workshop provides families with an introduction to their rights and responsibilities under Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Massachusetts Special Education Law and No Child Left Behind (NCLB). This workshop is designed to help parents learn to be effective partners with their child’s school to decide their child’s eligibility for special education, and to plan, make decisions and monitor their child’s progress in school. A presenter from the Federation for Children with Special Needs will conduct this workshop. Federation workshops are free and open to the public. Join us!

It's Not Too Early! Garden News

Winter greetings!

The fourth annual Fedco Seed sale is underway.

Yes, now is the time to be thinking about this year’s garden. This year we want you to think about your garden and the children’s garden at WES. The proceeds for this sale will be used to support the children’s efforts in the WES school garden. As of this year, the kindergarten through the fourth grades are planting, harvesting, and experiencing the physical and nutritional benefits of working in the garden while providing healthy food for their individual classes and the cafeteria. New for this year is the planning and planting of an edible landscape by our fifth grade.  
Fedco, a favorite of New England gardeners who appreciate cold-tested sustainably grown seeds, will supply the seeds. Many of you may remember these seeds from past years and their excellent performance in the garden and the generous number of seeds in each packet.  

How does it work?

It is simple. Take individual orders on the forms brought home by your child. Additional forms are available by going to the website, http://www.fedcoseeds.com/forms/williamstown.pdf or from a fifth grade classroom. All forms, plus checks written out to The Town of Williamstown/WES, (checks are preferred over cash, please) should be returned to your child’s classroom teacher. You can send them in as you collect them, or wait until the seed sale ends on February 29. Seeds, along with the original order forms, which include growing information, will arrive at school mid-March, in plenty of time for the growing season. You will be responsible for final distribution of seeds. 
We ask that you do not allow children to sell door-to-door. Think about family, friends, and co-workers who would like to order seeds from your child.

So, you are not a gardener.

Not to worry. Fedco seeds make great gifts for Mother’s Day, birthdays, and house-warming gifts. If you are a beginner, try growing sunflowers or beans with your children to experience the fun and productivity of having a garden.

Opening Ceremonies: 9:30 AM
Bowling Starts : 9:45 AM
Lunch: 12:00 PM
Awards: 1:00 PM
Closing Ceremonies: 1:30 PM

1. All bowlers MUST have an up-to-date Special Olympics Medical Form to Peggy Harner by Thursday, February 2, 2012.

2. Submit ENTRY FORMS (See attached) to Nick Ruggeri or Peggy Harner by Saturday, January 28, 2012.

3. Each bowler will bowl 3 games. Bowlers who use an adaptive device (ramp or bumpers) will be accommodated.
     *****You MUST indicate "RAMP" or "BUMPER" on your Entry Form if your bowler requires it.*****

4. Scratch Date will be Thursday, February 2, 2012.
     **If your bowler is unable to bowl, PLEASE let us know by February 2nd, so that final lane assignments can be made.**
     We want everyone to have a fair assessment!

5. Please wear your yellow Special Olympics T-shirt.

The schedule for the upcoming English/Language Arts Schedule is below. Parents, please note: participation in MCAS testing is critical. Students feel most at ease when they are able to take the assessments at the same time as their grade level peers. New Kindergarten Classroom!

Due to increased enrollment over the summer, we have made the decision to open a fourth kindergarten classroom. Please join us in welcoming Erin Callahan back to WES as our newest K teacher. Thank you to all kindergarten families for your support in this transition and to all the faculty and staff who are busily joining Erin in getting ready to welcome the class of 2018 on September 7!
