Springtime Health & Safety Tips
Bike Helmets Please have your child wear a bike helmet when on self-powered wheels–they are required when biking in Massachusetts. Please also remind him/her to walk the wheels at school.
Check For Ticks Check for ticks right after coming indoors, whether from a hike or playing in the yard. Do a full body check; bathing or showering may make it easier to find ticks. Check clothing, shoes, backpacks, and pets as well. To remove a tick, grasp it where it enters the skin with fine pointed tweezers, pull directly outward, then clean the spot with soap and water. Call your doctor if a rash and/or fever, aches, and pain develop.
Wear SunscreenAs the sun returns to our climate, please protect your child's skin from UV damage by applying sunscreen before school.

THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
WES was honored to welcome Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, and Mother Teresa to our school this week as part of Mrs. Kassin's C & O Road Show. Mrs. Kassin's 2nd graders wrote and starred in this educational performance that taught the audience all about the world's continents and oceans. We also learned about animals, people, music, and sports from around the world–what a treat! The class delighted a grown-up audience Monday evening and spent the week traveling through the school performing for primary classrooms. Great work, Mrs. Kassin's class!
Calling All Library Books
Library books are due FRIDAY, MAY 25. All books need to be returned for inventory. Please check on shelves, in your car, and under beds for school library books. Notices for lost/ overdue books will be sent home via your child's classroom teacher. Your help is greatly appreciated. *Also, volunteers are needed to help with inventory. If you are interested, please see Sue Lynch in the library. Thank you.

Berkshire Bookworms Recommend...
Need a summer read? The Berkshire Bookworm 2012 award for the best book we read this year goes to Scott Mebus' The Gods of Manhattan. "This book tells the story of a boy who, with the help of his sister and a few friends, discovers a secret world called Manhatta and then realizes he has to save it! We recommend this book for its twists and turns and mysterious world that sits next to ours, making this original adventure even more exciting than any other. We hope you like it as much as we did!" –The Bookworms
Hope you'll consider joining us for next year! The Berkshire Bookworms are open to all students in 4th-6th grade. We meet monthly in the WES library. First book for next year: Visiting author Cynthia Lord's newest book, Touch Blue. Second book: Blue Balliett's The Danger Box

From the Cafeteria
Did You Know? Our milk, New England Hood milk purchased from Crescent Creamery in Pittsfield, comes from farmers who have pledged not to use artificial growth hormones on their herds. Tankers are tested for the synthetic hormone rBST and antibiotics at the farm and again at the processing plant. If any were to be detected, the whole tanker would be dumped and the farm that sent it would be held liable!

Clothing Sale Huge Success!
WE DID IT AGAIN! Thanks to your donations and volunteer help, the Spring Clothing Sale made almost $4000 for the school last Saturday. We exceeded our budgeted projection and made $500 mare than last spring's sale. From donating items to rolling racks back into storage, YOU made all the difference.
Special thanks to: Kija Bolton (master of the laundry!), Libbie Pike, Montserrat Lemense, Kelly Paul, Valerie Hall, Elayne Murphy, Susan Abrams, Venetia Greenhalgh, Julia Pedroni, Rebeccah Kamp, Luda Polotai, Martha and Elizabeth Westerdahl, Patrick Schoorlemmer (donations collections), Kirsten Rose, Sue Hamilton (at-large press agent), Kira Bingemann, Liliana Sills, Hilary Greene, Rachel Louis, Amrita Lash, Colleen Martin, Jean Smith & her girl scout troop, Charlotte and Nancy Rauscher, Caroline Schneider, Anne Donati, Susan Trimarchi, Amy Kernagis, Doris Devadoss, Lauren Gotlieb, Ms. Bitteker's and Mr. Coniglio's classes (moving everything to-from storage), 6th grade babysitters, and the amazingly helpful custodial staff.
