Side by Side
Side by Side
Our philosophy...
Williamstown's Side by Side is an early education program for children between the ages of three and five. The program consists of a morning, an afternoon, and a full day option and serves between thirty and forty five children each day. It is administered by the Williamstown Elementary School. Approximately half of the children in the classroom are delayed in their development.Side by Side reflects the philosophy that inclusive education is a valuable school experience for all children. Developmental inclusion is a form of school programming which brings together in one classroom children with and without special needs. It is Side by Side's vision that if all children have the opportunity to learn and grow together they will develop an understanding and acceptance for every individual.
Preschool Screening
Each March the Williamstown Elementary School (WES) conducts a screening for all Williamstown preschool age children (age 2.6 to 4.6). The screening gives parents information about their child's development. In addition, a vision and hearing screening is conducted. All parents are encouraged to have their child screened. Contact WES in February and early March for more information and to make an appointment (458-3798).
Special Needs
If parents have concerns about their child's development (speech, motor, cognitive) they are encouraged to contact the Williamstown Elementary School Special Education Department (458-3798).
Lottery
Each spring Side by Side holds a lottery to fill vacancies which are anticipated for the following fall. Interested parents can call Williamstown Elementary School beginning in February to place their child's name in the lottery (458-5707). Preference is given to Williamstown residents. The lottery is held in April, and families are notified by mail.
